The History of Renault Vans The First Renaults were produced way back in 1898 and the company was formed by Louis Renault just after with his two brothers. One of the brothers died shortly afterwards in a car racing accident in 1903> Over the next 100 years Renault have produced everything from ammunition, airplanes, tanks, taxis, buses, and commercial vehicles. During the war Louis Renault made vehicles for the occupying Nazis, and for this treason he was arrested as a collaborator after the war. He died of a broken neck, and most agreed murdered in his cell in 1944. As such his assets were seized by the French Government and the Renault factories became Régie Nationale des Usines Renault. The vehicles sold well, but in 1984 Renault were losing a billion French Francs per month. Due to the losses boss Georges Besse cut back on racing, sponsorship and jobs, laying off thousands of workers, for which he was assassinated by Action Directe a left wing terrorist group in 1986. By 1987 the company was now financially stable. The company launched a range of new models in the 90's without which it would have probably gone through. It was the Renault Clio that saved them. The French government own 15.7 % of the company, since it was privitised in 1996. The company own 36 % of Nissan, hence many of the vehicles are shared. The Vauxhall/ GM presence is due to Renault trying to buy their way back into the US market where they are not so popular. Renault Vehicles Commercial 1978 - 2002 was sold to Volvo who are owned by Gem, and are now called Renault Trucks. The vehicles they make are shared with Gem and Nissan, since they all own shares in each other. Renault trucks make everything from the Renault Master to the VAB armored personnel carrier.
