The VW or Volkswagen van was originally inspired by two people in Germany in 1933. Of all people, Adolf Hitler and Ferdinand Porsches. At the time in 1933 access to vehicles was poor for the masses, and Hitler of all people came up with the idea of an affordable car for the masses. It was called the Volkswagen or in German, the people's car. It was Hitlers own idea that the vehicle should return 33 mpg at least, and cost no more than 1000 Reich Marks. Thus the Volkswagen or VW company was formed. By 1936 they were producing these vehicles in quantity. Porches choose the flat for engine which now is remade in many sports cars, because it was the cheapest and they produced quite a remarkable 22.3 HP. You may recognize this vehicle as the Beetle. This information was not taken from the offical Volkswagen Van website as you may well have guessed. Porches just for reference was never a member of the Nazi Party, so don't feel guilty.
After the war the Allies wanted this brand with it's little outdated c ar to die off and it would have done if it wasn't for one man, Major Ivan Hirst. He assembled around 58 from spares at the bombed factory, which in impressed the MOD so much that they ordered 5000 vehicles.
Production continued at a rate of roughly 1000 a month at a town unofficially called "Volkswagen" which is now called Wolfsburg.
A Dutch importer started to import these vehicles and eventually produced a commercial version named the VW Transporter. Bear in mind that there was a UK ban on importing German goods, the vehicles were produced in Southern Ireland, South Africa, Brazil, and Australia.

More popular than ever VW Vans
In some countries, the VW van is not only a popular choice it is the only choice, such as in some countries in south America. Here the VW Transporter reigns supreme volume wise. Volkswagens key philosophy behind their VW Van sales if safety. Every model, regardless of price comes more or less with the same safety features, so even if you are going for a cheap VW van, it will have the same features as the top of the range. Typically even the smallest van, the VW Caddy has ABS as standard, along with at least one airbag, and a second to none crash crumple zone. From an engineering point of view, it is said that a typical VW Van may not be run in until the engine has achieved at least 50,000 miles! They are built to last, which perhaps goes some way to explain the Volkswagen Vans remarkable resale value. Typically a customer who chooses such a product is seldom disappointed, especially when they take the lead with new products such as the VW Crafter which has just overtaken the Iveco Daily as the UK's longest van, in it's maxi variant. It now tackles both the Daily and the Sprinter.
